Kann mich nur anschliessen, ganz feiner Sound! Bin sehr überrascht dass jemand meinen Geschmack so trifft! DANKE MIDIMAL!

In Search Of Water is the first substantial offering from Swiss producer Midimal (Christian Merki), a rising star in the progressive psytrance world. Midimal’s discography is sparsely populated—featuring no more than a handful of songs released on obscure compilations—but he has accumulated many years of experience as a DJ and producer in the Swiss psytrance underground. Subtitled “a dive into progressive realms,” In Search Of Water is a concept album unified by the presence of aquatic themes in the choice of track titles, the use of samples, and the overall feel of the music. Midimal’s bright and melodic style rests comfortably with the likes of FREq, Motion Drive, Vaishiyas, Zen Mechanics, Lish, Yotopia, and Liquid Soul (who also mastered this CD). Unlike many other progressive psytrance acts, Midimal has not absorbed any of the electro influence that is currently fashionable—this is pure psychedelic trance for the morning hours!

Take A Breath serves as an excellent opener. After an inviting vocoder-laden introduction the song explores the full range of Midimal’s fat synthetic style. Clean melodies and tough tribal drums compete for attention as smoothly orchestrated transitions develop the storyline. This is a fine way to kick it off!

Liquid Form is distinguished by an intriguing use of a highly filtered sample but doesn’t quite measure up to the quality of some of the others here. The issue is merely that the main ideas are exhausted toward the end and the song starts to drag.

Deep Devil achieves an emotional resonance with the listener through the use of blissful atmospheric surges. Pretty melodies unfold with careful timing to engage in call-and-response games reminiscent of the good old days of FREq circa 2004. The results are deeply moving; I’d call this the song of the album.

Contact features strong melodic leads with a touch of the old school spirit. There is a delicacy at work here: the pacing allows time for the small details to make their mark, the leads never seem to overpower, and the build-ups result in subtle returns rather than explosive climaxes. This is music you can ease right into yet it still packs a punch. Gorgeous stuff!

Precipitation is a fun-filled song that is bound to elicit an enthusiastic dance floor reaction. Slick bass lines forge a bouncy groove as quirky hooks and wild sounds cavort around. Solid!

The title track is well-positioned as the keystone to the album as a whole. Its main feature is a set of somewhat nonsensical female vocals delivered in a similar fashion to those of Liquid Soul’s heavily remixed anthem Born In A New World. Not bad, but I tend to avoid tracks like these—the message is perhaps too specific, the tone a little too preachy.

Midimal deploys powerful rhythmic elements and sharp melodies on Over & Out. A heavy use of reverb and delay fills the song with looming masses of sound—storm clouds gathering on the horizon. Considerable tension is released as pretty melodies unravel in the course of the journey. Another favourite.

Control Yourself is the fastest track on the album at 140 BPM. It doesn’t deviate from what has come before; this is merely more of the same with slightly more punch. The bright and sunny vibes of this song complete the dance-friendly portion of the album on a high note.

Slipping Human is the obligatory downtempo finale. The production quality ensures a smooth comedown without surprises.

In Search Of Water succeeds where many similar debut efforts flounder. Midimal makes a coherent use of the album format—the tracks flow together and compliment one another. Although there is no serious deviation in style between many of these songs it doesn’t take long for their individual charms to shine through. Deep Devil, Contact, and the opening track Take A Breath are particularly captivating, but there are no bad tracks here. In Search Of Water is an impressive debut effort from the Swiss newcomer Midimal and a promising beginning for Frakasound Records. Fans of the more upbeat side of progressive psytrance as represented by FREq and Liquid Soul would do well to try this album out.
